When a golfer hits a shot that does not match the intended pattern, the fastest answer is not always another feel. It is a comparison against the movement that produces that player’s best golf.
Bryson DeChambeau describes using Sportsbox that way. On his first-party Sportsbox page, he says his team captured his swings in 3D and checked whether his numbers matched the swings he makes at his best. That process, he says, removed guessing: when a shot missed, he could identify why.
Establish a personal baseline
Bryson’s workflow starts by recording or importing good swings. Those swings become a reference for how he moves when performance is strong. This matters because useful coaching is not about forcing every golfer toward one model. It is about understanding the movement pattern that supports that player’s intended ball flight and performance.
Convert the baseline into goal ranges
A single target number can be brittle. Goal ranges give the player room to move while keeping the important pattern measurable. Bryson’s Sportsbox page gives concrete examples for turn and Sway Gap in his backswing.
The coaching move is to choose only the measurements connected to the miss. If the ball starts or curves differently, compare the relevant movement pattern against the player’s baseline before adding a new instruction.
Use feedback to calibrate feel
Bryson describes using Swing Monitor to connect feels with the numbers that produce his best golf. The data does not replace feel. It helps the player learn which feel produces the intended movement.
That creates a practical loop:
- Observe the miss.
- Compare the movement with the player’s baseline.
- Identify the measurement that changed.
- Choose a feel or task.
- Confirm whether the movement returned to the goal range.
Dana Dahlquist’s Sportsbox webinar, “Coaching Champions with Data,” presents this work as a 2024 U.S. Open case study. The responsible takeaway is not that one number won a major. It is that a personal baseline and immediate 3D feedback gave coach and player a more precise way to diagnose variance and make decisions.
